I like to clean the spark plug threads each time I replace the plugs and this tool does it well. While that might seem like overkill to some, I like to take extra care with modern aluminum heads. It is easy to strip and damage the threads and a plug blowout is not fun to fix. Using this tool does not add that much extra time to your job and I find that using this with a little oil lubrication on the threads works very well. This is a thread chaser, not a tap, but you still need to use caution during use. the threads are not as sharp as a regular thread chaser kit, but I find that to be a positive when dealing with aluminum heads. The thin profile is excellent and is one of the primary reasons for my selection of this specific product. The thin profile is basically a requirement now as many cars are needing it, so having a non thin profile one is just redundant if you have this one, unless your needs might require a short length. I cannot give 5 stars as I am not so happy with the fit of the 3/8 drive. It is not very firm and the grooves inside for the detent ball do not work so well. This could get 5 stars if one of those were replaced by a hole for the detent ball which usually holds far better. While that is normally an impact thing, I am not intending on impact here, just a tight and form hold to avoid the chaser from coming off of the extension hen used.I would not hesitate to buy another if I needed assuming that the overall value is still there. I was informed by ARES that they do in fact offer a lifetime warranty on this tool, even though it is sort of a cutting tool. Keep a light coating of oil on this while stored in your box and you should be happy with this. Please note that I am not a professional, so my statements should be interpreted as such.

Just bought a used car to discover the oil drain hole and plug threads were damaged, but not completely stripped. I did some YouTube research and decided to try a “thread chaser” before a “thread tap”. What I learned is the “thread chaser” is less aggressive and is more suitable for repairing damaged threads. A “thread tap” is more suitable when the threads are completely damaged/stripped and you need to cut new threads.I confirmed the diameter and pitch of the oil drain plug and purchased this thread chaser. Oil was still dripping from the drain hole as I was using the chaser. The dripping oil kept the thread chaser lubricated while I was using it and pushed debris out of the oil pan.I started the thread chaser by hand until I could tighten it no further. Then I used a socket and tightened 1/2 turn and then backed out 1/4 turn. I repeated this process several times and then backed the chaser out all the way to remove any debris. I didn’t want debris getting into the oil pan. I repeated the above process many times until all the threads of the thread chaser disappeared into the oil pan. I then replaced the thread chaser with the oil drain plug. The oil drain plug screwed into the oil pan perfectly with almost zero play. I then torqued the oil drain plug to factory specs. After several days, the oil drain plug is still on tight and not dripping any oil.

Did the job on my 1981 Yamaha midnight maxim, the spark plug couldn’t go in and this tool did the job. It took 4-5 times to get it right.

I thought my riding mower was toast and would require an expensive trip to the local repair shop. I crossthreaded the spark plug liner and was sure it was something I would not be able to repair. I did a little YouTubing and came across this little thread chaser tool. I figured for around a $20 investment (including new spark plug), that it would be worth it to give it a go. I spent less than 10 minutes working on my issue and to my astonishment, it resolved my problem. Engine turned over like a champ and ran great!

Works fine, remember this is a chase not a tap so there’s no cutting edge. Take you time, use grease, in out repeat.
