I was about to return the unit but gave one last chance. It was occasionally dropping out and the only thing I surmise the slip rings or brushes were not making good contact. So I said, what the heck and flushed it out with the pressure washer. Seems now to work as it should. Looks like sloppy assembly work to me. UPDATE: I thought the issue was gone but the alternator did not pick up yesterday until I gave the engine a rev. Not right. I am likely going to have to look at disassembly to smooth the brush guides and clean slip rings. Had to drop to 2 stars after the problem continued. This all makes me wonder about longevity.

I purchased this alternator to replace the old 6V generator on my ’54 Chevy 235, and modified the original mounting brackets to work with it. I was able to run a single wire, eliminating the voltage regulator on the firewall, and it charges just like it should. I can’t speak to longevity, but hopefully it will last.

I’ve been looking for a while for a one wire alternator with black pulley, plated fan and natural cast aluminum case. Score! This unit is exactly like picture, fits perfectly in place of swap meet chrome unit that looked out of place. Works well and looks right, priced right also. Update. The alternator became very noisy after about 20 min. Of run time. I did not want to risk getting another noisy bearing alternator, and since I really liked how this one looked, I bought bearings for13 bucks and replaced them. All good now. I would buy again, but treat and replace bearings if needed before install
