I was having problems with a Genuine Buddy 50 scooter I bought used. The problems persisted after switching out some parts, leaving the most likely culprit to be the carburetor. But I didn’t want to blow >$100 on a carb if the engine was bad. That’s where the compression tester comes in.In my situation, I had to unscrew the spark plug on the scooter and screw in the hose that came with this unit. The other end of the hose is inserted into the meter. After connecting the device, I turned on the machine and hit the electric starter a couple times, getting a healthy readout (> 150 psi). I hit the kick start a couple times and the readout crept upward slightly. So, according to the compression tester, the engine was fine. With this information, I proceeded to replace the carb, and now the scooter runs. So, in my experience, this tester worked. It comes with some adapters for use depending on the size of your spark plug; I did not need these. The only problem with this device was that the connection between the meter and the hose was extremely difficult to make; I had to apply a great deal of force. Note: you’re supposed to pull back a metal ring on the meter before trying to insert the hose. Once the hose snaps in place, the metal ring you were pulling back should be able to return to its original position, covering the connection between the meter and the hose. For me, the snapping into place did not happen. I thought I got a unusable product…. but with enough force, I was able to make it work. Taking off one star for that.Check if this will fit in your vehicle, based on your spark plug diameter. If it’s going to fit, there’s no reason to pay more for an air compression tester, as far as I can tell.

Simple easy to use. While it’s not something I use all the time, when I rebuild my dirt bike, snowmobile or jet ski it’s worth having to verify proper compression. If your looking to buy a used powersport toy, its worthwhile to check compression to make sure your not buying a worn out engine that needs work

So far so good for small engines… I’m using it for chainsaw testing. An advantage to this INNOVA unit is that the schrader valve is at the end of the tubing where it threads into the spark plug hole. You want that valve as close to the cylinder as possible in order to get accurate readings. I’ve used this tester on numerous chainsaws with/without scored pistons and it’s working well.Versus the harbor freight 8 piece kit #62638 (to possibly save some people some time & effort):I initially bought the harbor freight 8 piece kit #62638 and returned it… That turned out to be a piece of junk. First it was giving me readings in the 60-65 psi range on known good chainsaws like a 372xp that use all the time (read 155psi with the INNOVA versus 60 psi with the HF 62638). A chainsaw generally won’t even start until you get well over 100psi depending on manufacturer. The INNOVA was reading a more believable 150-170 psi on my chainsaws that are perfectly operational and 115psi on a 390xp with a slightly scored piston/cylinder. Another issue with the harbor freight is that one of the connections fell apart after 2 days of use.

I finally found one that works like a charm. Believe me…. I bought 5 or 6 compression testers over the last few years and none of them worked right. I bought one from the auto parts store , 2 from harbor freight who said I can’t return it again – even though it doesn’t work – 3or so from Amazon that never worked right and I was starting to think I would need to pay out a few hundred to buy one off the Snap-On truck until I found Innova. I know they make car scanners and they are a trusted brand so I gave it a shot – and for the first time in years I Finally found a compression tester that actually works! Give me an Amen!

On my working Victa Line Trimmer this reads 50psi. At this compression it shouldn’t even be starting. Not accurate.

I used it once on my Ford F-150. Works as it should, same an most other compression tool. The gauge has a release button to release the pressure. Now I know my truck’s compression is great.
